This week I focused on a meditation practice that was new to me, Zazen Meditation. This meditation is the main pillar of the Zen Buddhist tradition and often focuses on insight into the nature of existence.
In Zazen mediation there are specific postures that are acceptable to use. These include Burmese, half lotus, lotus, Seiza and chair. I used Burmese, as it was the most comfortable position for me. Your hand are held in cosmic mudra, with the dominant hand held palm up with the other hand resting in that hand so the knuckles overlap. The thumbs of each hand lightly touch so they make an oval position. This mudra helps bring the attention inward.
Zazen meditation focuses heavily on the breath to bring the practitioner inward, so this was similar to breath focused meditation. As you find your mind is wandering, bring it back to the breath and do not become attached to the thoughts entering your mind.
Below is the video I followed one of my mediation days and I have included it here for you.
I have found that I do feel slightly more focused during my meditations as I am doing it more, but it really depends on the day. I think it will be a long journey for me to feel really grounded and clear during my meditations.
