SAMR model
How do we use technology to expand what is possible in the classroom ?
Substitution (enhancement)
– no functional change to the activity
ex – students are using computers for typing instead of the written page
Augmentation (enhancement)
– tech as a direct tool substitute with functional improvement
ex – students are collaborating and sharing notes with each other online
Modification (transformation)
– tech allows for significant task redesign
ex – notes have hyperlinks or links to videos included in them
Redefinition (transformation)
– tech allows for the creation of new tasks, previously inconceivable.
ex – assignment is a podcast instead of a written assignment

SAMR can be used as a roadmap for teachers to integrate technology into the classroom. I personally really enjoy this model because it lays out technology usage in very easy steps. Teachers are able to look at the model and decide which section would be appropriate for the task at hand. Sometimes, tech might not be needed… or if you refer to the analogy below, sometimes you just need to grab a pumpkin spice latte instead of a coffee. I do enjoy a pumpkin spice latte from time to time, but more often than not, a coffee is perfect for my everyday life. I see myself using this model to push myself to use more tech in my teaching.
