Up until now on my mediation journey I have been meditating 3 times a week. This week I decided for my mediation variation, I would meditate for 5 minutes everyday as opposed to the 10 minutes every three days. I wanted to see if it would have a different effect on me, if the 5 minutes was too short and if it was an overall more effective practice.

The Verdict
Honestly, I am unsure. On one hand, I meditated everyday, which felt really great. On the other hand, 5 minutes was quite short.

Now you may be asking, well Michelle, why don’t you meditate for 10 minutes everyday then? And my answer would be, that I’m not quite there yet. Science on goal setting and actually following through tells practitioners to start small and stay small for quite awhile. These small incremental changes lead to long lasting habit building and actual change. I fear if I jump into 10 minute everyday meditation, I will fall off the wagon and stop all together feeling overwhelmed by an unrealistic expectation set on myself.

That being said, 5 minutes everyday was attainable and may lead to longer lasting change due to adding the practice of mediation into my daily routine. I may bring this practice into the rotation and oscillate between 10 min 3 days a week and 5 minutes everyday.

All I know is I am grateful for this practice.
